Would Jim Jones Have A Career Without Jay-z?

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Jim Jones is a small time rapper who it is surprising that he has risen above weed carrier status. This summer Jim Jones had a successful hit with his song “We Fly High.” “We Fly High” which features Jim Jones shouting Ballin’ for a hook was a certified success. Jay-z pushed things to the next level though when he released “Brooklyn High” which was a diss version of the song. As Jim Jones recently told Funkmaster Flex, Jim Jones was glad that Jay-z covered the beat and was able to add Jay’s verse for a remix that would provide additional radio play.

It is not clear what made Jay-z jump down to Jim Jones level to engage in rap beef. Cam’ron previously had tried started a rap beef with Jay-z. Cam’ron criticized Jay-z for any number of things, including wearing sandals this really seemed to bother Cam’ron, without getting as much as a response from Jay-z. Jim Jones, in his role as Cam’ron’s weed carrier, had released several diss tracks on several mix tapes. Then Jim Jones released “We Fly High” and Jay-z responded. It is not clear exactly why Jay-z stepped into the fray. The very fact of Jay-Z’s response raised Jim Jones status in many minds.

Without all this would Jim Jones be a rapper bloggers might be discussing? I doubt it.

The 50 Cent and Cam’ron Beef is Boring

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

A beef has brewing lately between 50 Cent and Cam’ron lately. I find it boring. The idea of another beef between 50 Cent and someone who is not highly respected in the hip-hop community.

My guess is that 50 and Cam are both doing this in an effort to raise attention for their brand images. 50 Cent is trying to refresh G-Unit after the sub par success of albums released on his label including Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo as well as M.O.P.’s recent flop. Cam’ron has recently seen recent success for beef with him and his associates with Dipset member Jim Jones recent success, due in large part to Jay-z participating in the beef. 50 Cent and Cam’ron, as well as their respective affiliates G-Unit and Dipset, risk overexposure as brands as the beef gets more and more ridiculous. Overexposure can have an impact in the hip-hop community; Jay-z might have more clout to push artist like Tru Life if Jay-z had not gone overboard on endorsements.

Part of me wants to do the cranky old guy routine, I’m only 25, and claim about the quality of rap beefs nowadays like O-Dub.

Mitt Romney: Presidential Candidate and Abortion Flip-Flopper

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Mitt Romney, former Governor of Massachusetts, is running for President of the United States as a Republican. Romney is in many ways an attractive candidate: he is religious, he has experience as a Governor and he didn’t screw up the Olympics when he was in charge of the Olympics.

Romney has two major problems to his candidacy. Romney is a Mormon and he has previously been pro-choice. Being a Mormon may be too much for the American populace to accept. A new Gallup Poll suggests only 72% of Americans would be willing to vote for a Mormon. On the other hand, being religious of any sort may play well with the conservative base. Romney has also flip-flopped on the abortion issue. Romney appears to be clearly pro-choice on the abortion issue when he was running for Governor of Massachusetts but has claimed to be Pro-Life as soon as he started running for President. This could be a killer issue in a Republican Party that makes abortion out to be a litmus test. Below is a YouTube video of Romney stating his pro-life credentials:

But how has Romney actually performed as governor? Not that great, The Cato Institute recently gave Romney a C for his performance as Governor.

Ron Paul Releases YouTube Video Anouncement

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Republican Congressman Ron Paul has released a YouTube video announcing his Presidential run. The video is a pretty well done video with Ron Paul sitting in what appears to be his house with family photos in the shot. Ron Paul seems to be running on a libertarian platform aimed at the base of the Republican Party. Anti-government rhetoric such as Ron uses in this candidacy announcement can appeal to a Republican base that helped get Republicans control of Congress in the 1994 election.

The Economkics of Hustlin’

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Below is a video of Spoken Word Poet Tommy Bottoms talking about the economics of hustling; both street and stock hustling. Video gives a good introduction to the world of economics:

Update: In a similar thought here is a video of Freakonomics author Steve Levitt explaining, in both street and economic terms, the organizational structure of crack dealers. After hearing Levitt’s talk it becomes apparent that crack dealing is a lot less glamorous than one would think from listening to the crack raps of Young Jeezy or The Clipse.

Landmark Legal Foundation Are A Bunch Of Idiots

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Landmark Legal Foundation suggests right wing radio host Rush Limbaugh be nominated for the Noble Peace Prize for “nearly two decades of tireless efforts to promote liberty, equality and opportunity for all humankind, regardless of race, creed, economic stratum or national origin. These are the only real cornerstones of just and lasting peace throughout the world,” said Landmark President Mark R. Levin.

“Rush Limbaugh is the foremost advocate for freedom and democracy in the world today,” explained Levin. “Everyday he gives voice to the values of democratic governance, individual opportunity and the just, equal application of the rule of law — and it is fitting that the Nobel Committee recognize the power of these ideals to build a truly peaceful world for future generations.”

It is perfectly understandable to object some of the people the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to over the years such as Arafat but that gives no rationale to give the Noble Peace Prize to an entertainer. It seems pretty lazy of Mark Levin not to be able to do the legwork to find some one who actually has done something for the cause of peace or liberty.

This is just a shallow move by a second string radio host to kiss ass to the market leader.
