John Hall on Soda Taxes

I sent a letter to my Congressman John Hall opposing soft drink taxes and I am glad to say that his response was to oppose soda taxes. From Congressman Hall’s response:

Soft drinks alone are not the sole cause of the chronic diseases that plague our nation. While comprehensive health care legislation is still being formulated, I am concerned that a tax on soft drinks would be a regressive tax, and disproportionately hurt lower-income people. I believe we can achieve health care reform without raising taxes on lower and middle-class New Yorkers. I will be sure to keep your thoughts in mind should Congress vote on this issue.

While I am not sure any “health care reform” that is going to make it through Congress will improve our health system, I am glad to see the Congressman does not think soda taxes are the solution and realizes they would be a regressive tax.
